The Couture Cake - Little Venice Cake Company
I recently spotted one of the most delightful looking cakes that I'd ever seen and I desperately needed to know more about it. I discovered they were made by the Little Venice Cake Company and asked owner and director Mich Turner to shared a few of her secrets! The Little Venice Cake Company has been in business since 1999 and Mich has been awarded Harpers Bazaar & Chanel Entrepreneur of the Year. Naturally they are a hit with the fashion crowd and have numerous celebrity clients including David Beckham, Pierce Brosnan, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Diana Krall and Madonna.
What inspires your designs?
Fashion, interior design, textiles, nature
Do you bake and decorate the cakes yourself?
Yes – especially for all prototypes and work for the books
How big a team are you?
There are 4 of us in the team
What is your smallest, your biggest and which is your most popular cake?
Smallest – individual Crown cakes – Cool Britannia is the most popular; biggest was a 6 foot chocolate creation for BAFTA complete with gilded chocolate BAFTA masks. As all our cakes are bespoke there is not one single most popular design, but our chocolate truffle torte is the most preferred filling.
How did you become a baker? Where did you study?
I am not a baker – I am a food scientist, turned cake designer. I studied for my BSC Honours Degree in Food Science and Nutrition at University of Surrey, the cake design has all been self taught.
What is your favourite piece of clothing?
Favourite item - currently my Diane Von Furstenberg pleated top in rich ivory / Nude - makes me feel incredibly feminine!
The 6 foot chocolate creation for BAFTA complete with gilded chocolate BAFTA masks.
