Vegan CORK handbagS
As a fashion stylist, I’m always on the lookout for sustainable fashion items to feature in shoots and catwalk shows and of course for celebrity clients. I’ve had this Fabrikk cork handbag for five years and it’s gorgeous. Plus I love a pop of colour as it can lift any outfit.
Cork fabric is a type of textile material that is made from the bark of the cork oak tree. Cork fabric, also known as cork leather, is a natural, vegan alternative to animal leather that has been used for decades, particularly in Southern European countries like Portugal where cork trees are abundant. Cork fabric is often used to create handmade accessories such as bags, wallets, and shoes! Cork is also a friendly alternative to traditional animal leather.
It is a natural, sustainable, and environmentally friendly material that is soft, lightweight, and durable. Cork oak trees grow only in Mediterranean countries and can live up to 300 years. During their lifetime, expert cutters remove the bark without damaging the trees. Every nine years, the bark grows back, removing CO2 from the air. Cork fabric has a number of unique properties, including being water-resistant, fire-resistant, and hypoallergenic, making it an attractive choice for a variety of applications. It is often used in the production of bags, wallets, shoes, and other accessories, as well as in the construction of home goods such as coasters, placemats, and floor tiles.
We are starting to see the popularity of cork handbags in the fashion world. More and more I’m asked to include cork items in my editorials and fashion shows! Below are a few of my favourites!
