Pantone recently announced their Colour of the Year for 2023: Viva Magenta!

Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s vice president, “says Viva Magenta represents a prevailing desire for optimism, resilience, outside-the-box thinking and technological innovation so as to create a better world.”

Magenta is a manmade colour that was first synthesized in the mid-19th century with the discovery of mauveine, the first synthetic aniline dye. This discovery was made by a British chemist named William Henry Perkin, who was trying to create a synthetic version of quinine, a compound used to treat malaria. When Perkin's experiment failed, he noticed that the residue left behind in the flask was a bright, violet-like color. He purified the compound and named it mauveine, after the French word for the mallow flower, which has a similar color.

Mauveine was the first synthetic dye to be produced, and it was a huge commercial success. It inspired other chemists to try to create more synthetic dyes, and this led to the development of a range of new colors, including magenta.
